For Art Basel Paris 2025, Regen Projects is pleased to present a group of works foregrounding the conceptual, material, and formal threads that have shaped the gallery’s program over the past 36 years. The presentation reflects the gallery’s strong representation of women artists, bold and innovative approaches to abstraction, landmark works in photography, and inventive use of materials.
Rebecca Morris’s painting Untitled (#29-25) (2025) is an elegant abstract architectural composition in green and gold that reflects the construction and palette of the Grand Palais and l’Orangerie. Sable Elyse Smith’s Coloring Book 146 (2023) is part of an ongoing series investigating the paradoxes of the American carceral system. A nuanced critique of Western hegemony and perspective, Kader Attia’s Mirror Mask (2025) is a reflection on the fragmented nature of being at sites of cultural exchange. Blue Thistle (2025), a new painting by Aliza Nisenbaum, engages with the work of her mother, a still-life painter who drew inspiration from the flower markets of Mexico City.
Both Jack Pierson and Raymond Pettibon make distinctive use of language in their work––Pierson in his use of letters and raw materials, Pettibon in the evocative, mysterious texts that punctuate his drawings. On view in Paris are Pierson’s OVER THE MOON (2022), an exemplar of his iconic word sculptures, and characteristically graphic drawings by Pettibon that showcase his incisive draughtsmanship and mordant wit. Works by Catherine Opie and Wolfgang Tillmans speak to the gallery’s enduring commitment to photography: Opie’s contemplative Glowing Mountain (2024) and formally striking portraits from the Being and Having series sample her range and mastery of the medium, while Tillmans’s photograph São Paulo Still Life (2025) is a classic image by the artist—technically exacting and quietly poetic.
Strikingly original approaches to material are evident in works by Liz Larner, Elliott Hundley, Kevin Beasley, and Anish Kapoor. Larner’s MacGuffin is not in the thesaurus (2024) is a substantial ceramic work that deploys color and figuration as sculptural tools. Like much of Larner’s clay work, MacGuffin is not in the thesaurus is concerned with the anthropocene, synthetic environments, and extreme human interference with natural ecologies. Hundley’s most recent body of work draws inspiration from Jungian sandplay therapy, using a tray-like armature as a formal frame for his ambitious and omnivorous material experimentation. In Synthesizer III (2025), Kevin Beasley suspends found materials of personal or universal significance in dyed polyurethane resin, building vibrant, dense abstract composition from Virginia cotton, wood furniture, confetti made of t-shirts and house dresses, and more. Anish Kapoor’s seductive Burple to Burgundy (2024), an alluring optical illusion of space and void, distorts the viewer’s reflection and sense of inversion or protrusion, conjuring the metaphysical polarities of the container and contained.
